Listening Summary--Monday-Thurday(3/2-3/5)

          It ralks abbout “Cultural Shock” found in International Business Communication, Chaney and Martine state that because people who come into a new country can not successfully learn the culture there, they may have a problem in communicating, which called cultural shock or culture shock. When suffering from this problem, people may have many kinds of setback and defeat especially the lack of modern conveniences and standards of cleanliness, which were reported in a survey. In addition, the authors also mention that as a result of experiencing culture shock, people may show their sadness and hopelessness with homesick, uncontrolled eating or drinking, and some unserious illness.

Even though society did not pay more attention to culture shock before, some experts pointed out that if travels do not give up the old thinking patterns and receive new culture, both their bodies and mentalities will become sick.

Furthermore, companies usually spend a lot of money on culture shock. Because the employees who were sent to foreign countries often cannot adapt the new environments, they came back too early and made their company loose money and time. However, a research shows that if the workers have a short-time practice abroad before a long-time stay, the early return rate will drop.

Moreover, a limited period of remain is not only a easy way for people who have high technique know whether they want their spouses to stop the familiar jobs or not, but also is an effective way for people to move with their family.

Opinions: Even though I am not familiar with the field of business, I also feel culture shock when I went to Canada. I think people live abroad especially the international students need to have a life plan and try their best to put it inti practice. Of course, family and friends are very important and honest supporters for them.
